London-based Guinness World Records Ltd has certified a giant freshwater stingray (Urogymnus polylepis) caught and released in Stung Treng area on 13 June 2022 as the world’s biggest freshwater fish. At 300 kg, the ray’s weight made it bigger than a 293-kg Mekong giant catfish (Pangasianodon gigas) caught in Thailand in 2005, which previously held the record as the world’s largest freshwater fish.

At a ceremony in Phnom Penh on 14 Nov. 2023 (photo), Guinness World Records presented two certificates to Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Secretary of State Has Sareth – one for the biggest freshwater fish species and a second for the largest freshwater fish specimen.
